Acid Reflux

Hi friends!

Today, I would like to get personal with you guys. When I was in 7th grade, I was diagnosed with severe acid reflux. My voice was extremely hoarse and I was so frustrated we could not figure out what it was. Eventually, I went to a specialist and through a test, he figured it out. I was both relieved and upset. Prior to this, I had been drinking soda, eating fast food, and junk food like it was my job. My doctor gave me a list of foods I had to avoid if I wanted to keep my acid reflux under control. Reluctantly, I followed the list.

After several months, I started to feel much better. I could speak more clearly and stopped waking up in the middle of the night with heartburn. Being as young as I was, I thought I would be fine by just avoiding that list of foods. However, I would still get flares sometimes and I just could not pin point the cause of it. Fast forward a few years, I started eating a real, whole-food diet. Now, this is the best I have ever felt.

While I still avoid trigger foods, if I do accidentally ingest them, the flare-up is no where as bad as it used to be. I strongly believe this is because I healed my gut. Well, I should not say “healed”. It is an on-going process, but I sure have made progress. I want to help others who may be suffering from the same or similar type of situation. I know how hard it can be when you want to go out with your friends, or just any social situation in general.

Remember that every single body is different when it comes to trigger foods, but these are ones I choose to stay away from.

  • onions
  • garlic
  • tomato
  • lemon
  • chocolate (sometimes pure cocoa powder does not bother me as much)
  • coffee (I know, I know. it’s possible I promise)
  • citrus fruits (oranges, for example)

A few other pointers:

  • Eat many meals throughout the day, not one or two huge meals
  • Do not go too long without eating
  • Give your body enough time to digest before going this bed, this means eating dinner at least 3 hours before you are going to sleep
  • Take probiotics/digestive enzymes
  • Drink apple cider vinegar
  • Keep the stress to a minimum! It worsens symptoms.

The hardest for me to give up was definitely coffee. I do have it once in a blue moon, but that is pretty rare. Taking care of body has made me the happiest I have ever been. Do not worry other people thinking you are weird/annoying. This is YOUR life and YOUR body. Treat it how you want to. Besides, people like that do not belong in your life anyway. Being diagnosed with acid reflux is one of the main reasons I chose to become a Registered Dietitian.

Super Spice

Hi friends!

This post is about my favorite spice at the moment – TURMERIC. Yup, it is so special that it needs its own blog post. It is anti-inflammatory, manages diabetes, helps when you are sick, helps with digestive problems, etc. It really is a super spice. I have experienced these benefits first hand, which is why I am encouraging all of you to try it. It is so versatile you can add it to various meals/drinks/face masks. I am sharing some of my favorite ways to incorporate turmeric into your life. I use it every single day.

  • Turmeric latte (pictured above – especially helps when you are not feeling well!)
  • Chicken
  • Ground turkey
  • Salmon
  • Face mask (just mix turmeric & water)
  • Acne spot treatment

I suffer from many digestive problems, and adding turmeric into my diet has helped tremendously. I hope it will help you guys too! Let me know below 🙂
